A Minecraft community is a site where people "live" in the game. Although there's no precise definition of a "community", it normally has some sort of residential area where people can build their own houses. Most communities have a common theme for its buildings, and some of them have established special rules. Most communities on the server have portals, but not all. Many communities have their own resource repository ("community chests") so that the members of the community can share building materials effectively. Some communities have communal (rather than personal) mines or farms as well. How the members handle resources is up to each community.
Communities are usually lead by one or multiple leaders. In the Minecraft Awesome server, there is no specific requirement to be a leader and anyone can found a community, although it is generally encouraged to join an existing one. It helps people connect to the other players of the server easier, and it also helps save space in the world. Many users belong to multiple communities (citation needed) and while some of them thrive for a long time, others become abandoned ("dead communities") due to too many members going inactive.
